Hi there I'm looking for a gaming laptop with a budget of 3.5k CAD but can go over if it's worth it

What i want in the laptop is top notch gaming experience that can rival a desktop pc and I will be playing performance taxing games such as total war and witcher 3 and battlefield

It doesn't have to have a great battery life since it'll work as a desktop replacement and I'll be mainly using it at my home in China

The main one I'm looking at right now is the MSI GT72 DOMINATOR pro with 980m but I have also seen the dragon edition with gtx 980. I wanted to know if the upgrade and performance will be worth it on taxing triple A titles

Spec wise I'm okay with 2.6-2.7ghz skylake and I do want atleast 256gb of ssd and 1tb of hdd for anime and movies

The entire GT series has the Steelseries keyboard (except the GT80), which IS quite nice. The GTX980m, and especially the GTX980, are a good step up from the GTX970m. But only you can truly...

You realize of course that only the MSI GT80 Titan has the mechanical keyboard, correct?

I only mention it because you talked about the GT72 earlier. :D

Ah I might be a bit confused then, Its still a steelseries keyboard that I'm sure of on the GT72 dragon edition with GTX980

I think I want a desktop replacement laptop since I might be away from my desktop PC for a quite long time

But only you can truly decide if it is worth the extra cash to you. But hopefully others will come forth with their opinions. My opinion: if you can afford it, go for it.
