Solution

an amd 280x could almost cap that. I would suggest getting a 120/144 hertz screen to feel the super fps feeling of ultra smooth.

thanks! can you name me a good monitor for that 980?

Do you want 1440p @60hertz (60fps) or 144hertz (144fps) 1080p screen?

144hz 1080p or 1440p

Well I went 1080p @144hertz. Reasons: lots cheaper right now until the 1440p matures and drops price, pretty much zero screen tearing, and I heard about that smooth as better feel at 100fps +. I would say go 1080p @ 144hertz that fps is ultra smooth feeling and the 1080p is pretty cheap compared to a 1440p. Then upgrade to 1440p 144hertz when things get cheaper. BTW I am selling my 1080p 144hertz 24inch only 1.5 months old and prefect condition. I don't have the best eyesite and I sit back 3 feet with my desk, so I need to buy the 27 inch version of this. 😛

Disclaimer: Once you touch the quality of 100fps+ for awhile you will never settle for less. 60 hertz will feel like ghosting even within windows os.

The question you need to ask yourself, is what experience are you looking for? And what games do you play?

Do you want top-end graphics quality? Get 1440p.

Do you want buttery-smooth gameplay? Get 144Hz.

I use 1080p 144Hz and it's great. But TBH a GTX 970 can handle that just fine as well, unless you want to do 8x MSAA in all your games. (even then though, 970 can probably handle it).

To be fair the GTX 980 will still perform better at either of those screen, but not 40% more price worth.

yeah i want a buttery smooth as fly!
1080p is enough for me.
as for monitor brand and model?

What size do you want 24 inch or 27inch? http://pcpartpicker.com/part/acer-monitor-umfg6aab01 I have this one and it is super, but I am upgrading to a larger screen size which is about $100 more.

Solution

just the 24 inch monitor. it is enough. thanks for all the info!
