Hi all,

I am testing a game and need some upgrades (~400€) asap for an old setup that was only used for CS:GO .
The current game is running so far on the old setup but I'm encountering problems sometimes during the game.

Game requirements:

Minimum Specs:
Processor: Intel Core i5-2400/AMD Opteron 3365 or better
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 670 2GB / AMD Radeon R9 280 or better
Memory: 8GB RAM
Recommended Spec:
Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K/AMD Ryzen 5 1400
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD Radeon R9 390X or better
Memory: 16GB RAM

Current Setup:
Motherboard: M5A97 R2.0
CPU: AMD FX-8150
Memory: 2x Corsair 10700 4GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 4GB
Monitor: BenQ XL2411Z

I know I won't be getting much with 400€ and I'm not expecting to play the game on highest settings. A minor upgrade would be enough I guess. Or will I be able to get a whole new setup with this budget? What would be better?

I'd appreciate some help.

Greetings from Germany

You could upgrade your motherboard to something newer that uses the same ram and get a decent kick in the pants if it moves you to the 3770k:

You could also get new ram as well and move to a newer ryzen platform that should give you an even better future upgrade path, but it would cost more. Either route should be well under your 400€ budget.

Do you have any specific recommendations?
I'm guessing CPU would be the first part I should upgrade? And then choose a compatible motherboard?

It really depends on what you want to spend. I'm not familiar enough with the current ryzen deals to guide you to the best one, but I know 3770k combos can be had for near $100 usd in the used market.

As far as what to choose--you will need to make the cpu/motherboard choice together since one doesn't really make sense without the other. And if you're going ryzen, you'll need to think about the ram too.

Also, the phenom is lacking some of the newer instructions sets and may not run all your games.

I'm from the USA. But that gives you an idea. You might use a better CPU and add a better psu if needed.
Should I get this one instead?

There is a discount for this one in a local shop

Depending on how much that one is and then the motherboard and ram, it may not be as good a value as just dropping in a 3770k in your current setup:

Of course, you've got the budget to get the Ryzen combo so if the pricing is good, go for it. :)

I'd go with a new system, getting an old 1155 board or other old system is counter productive unless the budget is around 150-200. Sure it can be done, but it'd be living on borrowed time.

Depending on your psu, if it's not terribly aged and good quality, you can re-use it and instead get a graphics card, say a rx 580 or gtx 1650 super, or rx 5500xt.

Also, if you don't mind using a smaller motherboard in a large case and don't plan to overclock, you can opt for a budget b450 pro4, aourus-m, or heck, even a b450 ds3h.

If the 2700 is considerably discounted, get that as it comes with a substantially better cpu cooler, but for the most part, there wont be a discernible difference in gaming.
