I would appreciate any suggestions for a new computer build. I feel so hamstrung by laptops and the trouble with maintenance and upgrading components so I am going back to a desktop. I've always wanted to build one myself, and now is the time.

Here is what I currently use. (don't laugh)
HP DV8000 Laptop
AMD Turion 64 Mobile ML-34
1.58 GHz
2-Gb RAM

I mostly run productivity software and internet surfing. No gaming at all. I do some web page production. I also use CorelDraw and Corel Photopaint. My biggest slowdowns come from streaming video and doing Postscript fills in CorelDraw.

I'm looking for a computer that will serve me well for the next 7 or 8 eight years and I plan to start doing some personal video editing in the near future. Speed is more important that capacity. I've done some hands-on work inside of desktops but never this much so components which are not finicky would be nice.

I do not need a monitor. Budget = $1000

Thank you for any guidance you may provide.

Solution

Thank you so much for the list. I was very happy to see the Blu-Ray drive on your list as that was something I would like to have but I completely forgot about it.

Not a problem, That build should be more than enough for you, It will be a huge improvement. I put in an AMD FX cpu for the higher clock speeds, multiple cores, and their multi-threading abilities
