Looking for suggestions on my Next GPU (290x vs 780 vs 780ti)

I decided it's time for me to upgrade from my 6950 and I'm currently in the market for a new GPU.

At first I was really considering the 290x, but after some research I'm no longer so sure. I will not be gaming at resolutions greater than 1080p anytime soon (I would expect two to three years before I'd even consider 4k). Further more AA is critically important to me and my personal experiences tell me that Nvidia is usually better at handling AA than AMD, especially now that downsampling with AMD has become much more of a hassle to do. On the other hand my motherboard is crossfire ready but not SLI ready (albeit I doubt I'd really ever do 2 GPUs).

I've boiled down my options to:

3GB PNY GTX 780 XLR8 OC @ 395GBP

OR

290x battlefield 4 edition @ 465GBP

Which do you reckon I should get?

feel free to suggest alternate cards.

Edit:

Just found out my mobo is in fact SLI ready. I think that's a point in favor of the 780.

If I were you I'd wait till the 780 Ti enters the market, if you're willing to shell out the cash for it, it should be a more powerful option, especially since AA is an important graphical option for you.

The 290x is more powerful usually, but I'd wait for a non reference cooling design as currently the thing runs at 90+ degrees celcius on load which is mind boggling.

Do you think the 780 Ti is worth the extra cash @1080p?

Actually I just checked my mobo and it is capable of supporting quad-sli. I guess at those prices it makes more sense to go for the 780 and then get a second one if I need the extra power. What do you guys think?

If you just want to buy right now, I'd choose the GTX 780 as the price premium for the 290x doesn't justify having a 300W vacuum cleaner inside your case, but I'd also wait to see what AMD partners have to say in this matter, most likely when nvidia launches the 780 Ti.

I would say that you should get the EVGA GTX 780 superclocked or classified if your budget is closer to $500. If money isn't really an issue then the 780ti when the aftermarket ones release will be the best card by far. At 1080p any of the cards you are considering will be fine for gaming even with settings maxxed out. The biggest difference will be a couple years from now or if you decide to SLI them.

I personally prefer the EVGA brand, they tend to be the best overclocking cards (classified) and their software is top notch. I've have a couple of their cards over the years and have been extremely pleased. PNY isn't a bad brand but I don't consider them top tier either, the costs aren't much different...
