Looking for suggestions on new hard drive that will run WIN 98 with XP upgrade

Looking for suggestions on a new hard drive that will run WIN 98 with XP upgrade, updating daughters old PC and the old hard drive is IDE ( Seagate U series 5, 40 GB) new motherboard is SATA tried the adapters and it won't boot the old hard drive.
Just looking to replace it. Will any hard drive work ?

Thanks, that's what I thought and then I started seeing stuff about be compatible with different OS and I got really confused I replaced HD years ago but never ran into that.
