Looking for upgrade advice for gaming rig (300-400$ range, internal parts mostly)

In the past I've had trouble with getting parts that fit together properly, so am hoping I will have better luck asking here from builders who are more knowledgeable.

Currently running a 2.9 ghz dual core with GeForce GTX 560 Ti which are starting to show their age, and I'm looking to upgrade them as well as probably the psu and a new HDD. Top of the line is not important, mainly I'd like something with decent performance that's stable and will likely not need to be replaced for a long while.

The most resource intensive games I play are X3 series and some 2D building games with complex lighting/massive object counts like Darkout, Starbound, Terraria, etc (which don't need insane power but still tend to slow down some on my current rig).

If it matters I'm using Win 7 with a pending Win 10 update.

The parts absolutely needing upgraded are:
Graphics
Processor
Motherboard

Optionally may need upgrades for:
Memory (I have two 4gb DDR3 sticks; it's okay but if can get some better ones for cheap that would be nice)
Power Supply (not sure what my current psu is, but I believe it has just enough power to run what I have)
Tower (my current tower is a bit small, and has some trouble fitting the newer video cards)

Additionally I was considering getting a faster hard drive, either an SSD or hybrid. Truthfully this is just to help with save/load times in Distant Worlds and X3 (and other games with increasingly large save files) so it doesn't need to be extravagant but this is a part I'm willing to spend extra on if it's going to be a good long-term investment.

If I can get all (or most of) of the above under 400$ that would be amazing, but I may be able to go a bit over if there's a good compromise.

Thanks in advance.

Here is is! Its a bit more than your price, but it'll perform much better than a 2.9ghz dual core and a 560ti.

The GTX950 has give or take the same amount of power as the other still-new GTX960.

The i5 will also be a massive upgrade in almost everything.

Hi SeriouslyStache. Thanks for the suggestions, but that seems a bit more pricey on the individual parts than I was hoping for. It really doesn't leave any $ for anything else I might need (I did have my heart set on a new HD). I will definitely keep it in mind, though.

If by HD you mean Hard Drive, I have you covered.

It isn't an SSD or Hybrid 😛 (sorry if the term HD threw you off, but I explained that in my original post). However I can probably find one in that price range, so I'll see if the other parts you suggested meet my desires and go from there.

Thanks again.

Im determined. Lol
