well Windows 8 if officially supported by Direct X 11.1 Cards ie. AMD Cards from 7000 Series and Nvidia from 600 Series. Well actually it does not matter even if you have cards from older generations Windows 8 just works fine.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have been supporting DirectX API 11.0 and 11.1 practically since they were birthed. Officially as said above it is recommended to use an AMD series 7000 and above or the nVidia series 600 and above. Frankly any graphics card will do though as Windows 8 is backward compatible with DirectX.

I recommend, if you're going for a nice cheaper option, nVidia GTX660. The performance is reasonably good and AMD is moving slowly away from DirectX and toward Mantle. I cannot provide any help for you concerning Mantle and how that works with Windows as I use nVidia.

Any AMD and GTX cards should do just fine, I suggest the AMD 7000 and GTX 660-700 series

any modern gpu will do. if you're not into gaming then if you have a modern cpu(central proccesing unit) you can use it's own integrated gpu

You could use any PCI Express Graphics card available in the market from either AMD or nVidia. Also if you are low on budget you could use Integrated Graphics on Intel Processors (not sure about AMD processors).
But if you are flexible on budget, I would recommend you to go with any R9 series GPU from AMD or GTX 660 or above on nVidia.

Anything that could run Dx 11, should be your main priority. If you're going for budget, get the R7 265, or the GTX 750 ti. (The 2 gb variants for either one should be fine) If you want performance, try to get a GTX 760 (2 gb) or better.

Every Card WOULD WORK , unless you went back in a time machine and brought the first graphics gard which was invented and put it in your case.

Mostly i would recommend the
r7 and r9 series from AMD,
or the geforce 600 and 700 series with NVIDIA

As i said every card would support windows 8 but if the card has to take the advantage of this fast OS then you should go for some of the new graphics cards in town.

and going back to xp is problematic as there are no security updates and you are well exposed to all malwares even with a functioning anti-virus, the gts 450 will work with the windows 8 without any problems.

SO , go and get installing !

Try the new quadro k4000 thats what I use with my windows 8 work station. But the card really depends on your needs most high end graphics cards today will wiz on windows 8 as companies know that this is the latest operating system.

i got a gtx 760 and i was scratching my head for a month tying to get it working.(black screen on boot)
turns out it was a option in bios 'fast boot enabled' i turned it of and it worked fine. this is only a option in windows 8 and 8.1 i think. just a quick tip encase you run into the issue.

any new graphics card, and most older graphics cards too probably. if the computer is 5 or less years old then its almost guaranteed. always check though. a great program if u want drivers is 3dp chip. it was able to find a windows 8 graphics card driver for a 2005 laptop i have, which i think is quite cool seeing as thats 9 years old.

I would say preatty much everything will work i had an old hd5770 on win8.i would upgrade to win 8.1 tough since amd dosent make drivers for win 8 anymore
