Approximate Purchase Date: ordering parts as soon as I can
Budget Range: around $1500 but there is some flex in that, as you can see I’m already over 1500 on my list and don’t even have a case picked out.
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, surfing the Internet, movie, hope to get into some very light video editing
Are you buying a monitor: Yes, but it’s not going to be included in the 1500 budget. I’m looking at the https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/VG248QE/ (1920 X 1080)
Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I’m flexible, I do like Amazon as I’m a prime member for quick shipping and easy returns.
Location: Houston, Texas
Parts Preferences: Intel but I’m fairly new to this so kinda open
Overclocking: Maybe, but other than the basics of what it is I know very little about it
SLI or Crossfire: Don’t know what this is really so no
Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080

Additional Comments: The possible choices I’ve listed below in each category are items that kept appearing on “best computer you can build for $1500” lists from several different sites but am more than willing to consider alternate choices.
I’ve never built a computer before but I’ve changed out video cards, power supplies, disk drives so this will be a new experience.
Obviously I’m building the computer for now but even more for the future which is why some of the component choices I’ve listed are probably above what I currently need.
Since I’ve never built a computer before it would be great if level-of-difficulty was a consideration in choosing some of these parts (i.e. for a little bit more $ I can get something plug and play).
Some basic questions:
Cooling: Do I need additional cooling or is what comes with the processor and video card (and possibly case) already sufficient? Every build I see always list an additional cooler so going to assume it’s at least a benefit, especially for the relatively low price.
I would like it to be quiet and plan on having it in a desk recess with “limited” air flow if that matters. I’d prefer a fan that’s maybe easier to install and I have zero experience with liquid coolers. Think I might prefer 1 or 2 fans to liquid cooled.
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Almost every site I look at says this card is the best for the price but the only problem I have is there seem to be a massive amount of different “versions” or vendors of the card. Is there any real differences between them or is there a clear “best” one? Also, I might go to the GTX 1070 just to lower my budget but not sure.
Processor: Intel Core i7-7700k Again, think this is more than I need but looking towards the future. I did read on several sites that this processor paired with the GTX 1080 are tough to beat. I’m not at all sure about needing or using heat sink with this model but I’ve seen “cooler/thermal past not included” in some places.
Motherboard: Z270 Much like the video card, this appears on many best of lists but there are quite of few choices.
Case I’m open on the case but like the looks of the SilverStone RL06 Pro White. Main two things for me are size that will allow for easy installation of components just because I’ve never done this before and easy access ports (USB, headphones, etc.), preferably in the front of the case. The SilverStone also appears to come with 2 fans already although I don’t know their quality. Phanteks Enthoo Pro also seems ok. I should also mention that I will be adding a optical drive in the near future.
