Hi,

I would like to know the difference between the following devices:
  1. 5TB Expansion (STEA5000402) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...stea5000402_5tb_expansion_portable_drive.html
  2. 5TB Backup Plus (STHP5000403) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1478037-REG/seagate_sthp5000403_backup_plus_portable_5tb.html
  3. 5TB One Touch (STKC5000403) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1595206-REG/seagate_stkc5000403_5tb_one_touch_portable.html (Hopefully Amazon will start selling it soon!)

All of them run at 5400RPM?
All of them can be formatted to exFAT? Drive's controller board (PCBA) includes SATA to USB or only USB connector?
Is it possible to disassemble the enclosure and connect the drive using SATA? (I know it will void the warranty, I am not planning to do it unless the enclosure will stop working)

WD is out of the question thanks to this page

Thank you!

Seagate does not make it easy to find any information on these drives.

The first two drives are 5400rpm and the third (One Touch) is 7200 rpm. It seems that all of them come with an exFAT format. And from what I could find the drives that offer encryption use software that is downloaded.

5TB Backup Plus (STHP5000403) is shuckable with just an adapter but is an SMR drive.

5TB One Touch (STKC5000403) is available on Amazon, which states that it is a 7200rpm drive so it must be a Barracuda Compute, which is also an SMR drive according to Seagate.

The 5TB Expansion Portable is a 5400rpm drive so must be the 5400rpm Barracuda Compute drive.

Thank you RealBeast. Sorry for the delay.

Not all of them are SMR? to be honest I had no idea what it is so I had to Google a bit. This external drive will store movies only so speed isn't really important, I guess.

"And from what I could find the drives that offer encryption use software that is downloaded. " - I haven't seen anything about it, but anyway it will software encryption just like bitlocker.

The 5TB one touch (STKC5000403 ) is available on Amazon but for some reason on B&H it is a different model - STKC5000400 even though it's the same colour. Anyway, I prefer Red version unless I will order the Expansion.

Still can't decide which one to get.

Ordered STHP5000403 from Amazon. it failed Seatools generic test (look at this thread)
Seagate has 0% knowledge and they just said someone will contact me for a replacement but nobody did.
I got a replacement but it failed the test just like the first one.

Today I got STKC5000410 - They advertise on Amazon it is 7200 RPM (also spoke with Seagate, they explicitly said it is 7200 rpm)
in reality, it is 5400RPM.
I have added this page to Wayback machine in case they will change it.
Both model use ST5000LM000-2AN170 firmware 0001 - which is 5400RPM
