Looking to Buy a Monitor

My Asus VE248H 24.0" Monitor (1080p) appears to be in the early stages of failing. My plan before it started to fail was to hold off on upgrading until I upgraded my graphics card (Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 2GB). I've been holding off on that due to the inflated prices and waiting for the next-gen cards to drop. Long story short, I need a new monitor that will prepare me for the future (and will hopefully work OK with my 670 for a little while longer).

LOOKING TO BUY:
Monitor - 1440p minimum preferred, unless you can sell me on 4K; can my 670 run OK with this OR should I also buy a cheap 3GB 1060 or equivalent whiel I wait for the next gen cards)

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE:
Within the next week or two

BUDGET RANGE:
I would prefer to stay less than $500, but I may be willing to go higher if the cost can be justified.

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT:
Gaming; other tasks are minimal

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY:
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 2GB
PC Power & Cooling 750W ATX12V / EPS12V

CURRENT MONITOR:
Asus VE248H 24.0" Monitor (1080p)

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS:
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
G.SKILL TridentX Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Cooler Master HAF 922 ATX Mid Tower Case

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS:
Newegg
Amazon

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN:
USA

PARTS PREFERENCES:
Nvidia

OVERCLOCKING/SLI OR CROSSFIRE:
No

MONITOR RESOLUTION:
1080p, looking to upgrade to at least 1440p

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
Please advise if you think my 670 will struggle with this upgrade while I wait for the next-gen cards to drop. If so, do you think a 3GB 1060 would be worth it in the meantime?

Solution
Sorry man, looks like I was a little overconfident. Sometimes 1440p is called 2K also.

I'm not super caught up on monitors, so hopefully someone else here can recommend a specific model, but I will say that if you can get a good deal on a 4k monitor it might be about the same price as a similar 1440p monitor. Of course, if the 1440p is on sale it'll be cheaper.
For my personal preference I like 1440p under 27", and 4k over 27", and right at 27" it can go either way.

As for GPUs I'd keep the 670 and just run games at 1080p until the next generation drops, hopefully this summer.

Forgive my ignorance. I meant 1440p. I know this may be an issue since I'm only running a 670 so please advise if I should also buy a cheaper card (3GB 1060 for ~$250) to hold me over until the next gen cards are released.

*Note: I've updated my original post
