Hi guys!

Im sorry for posting the same question for the millionth time :)

I have what I thought it was a pretty "decent" computer. I have preorderded the new sony action cam that records 4k at 30 fps per second and was thinking maybe its a good time for me to start doing some amateur videos.
I would like to not spend a couple of thousand dolars for now until I figure out whether I like video editing and I have the patience for it :)
My current rigs looks something like:

I have four HD with plenty of space, including a SSD as my boot drive.

Im not looking to become a pro anytime soon so Im just wondering if you guys think this computer will let me get some work done. I dont need it to be lighting fast..
And if you guys think I need to change/add something, what would you advice?

Thanks!

Ps!

Please, let me know if I need to post some other info, super new at this :)

Solution
Unfortunately it will not.

You don't have to save several thousands to upgrade to an Intel. Here are some parts that would be good to start off with, if you can save up a bit longer.

I would suggest not actually shooting videos at 4k. Unless you have a 4k tv then editing and shooting in 4k can be really expensive and time consuming. Your set up should be fine for 1080p editing. Do you have any experience using editing software?

Heya!
Thanks for your answer. I do have a UHD tv that I was thinking to use as my secondary monitor once i get a new one when I get my extra cash in April. For now, my old samsung Full HD tv will make do. Please note that I need to buy parts slowly and thats why I am planning ahead. Wont start with 4k before april :)
As for the editing software, I do play with vegas and make some edits.
I forgot to mention that my motherboard is sabertooth 990fx R2.0

Thanks!
:)

As you slowely start upgrading parts I would highly suggest moving to Intel. I know the price is a bit cringing at first, but when it comes to processing power and hyper threading it will do much better than an AMD cpu. Upgrading to an I7-5820k will be amazing for editing but comes a bit expensive as DDR4 ram is still a bit high, and so are the motherboards. For some software I would suggest lightworks. It's free and pretty robust.

The best advice I can give you though is to just go out and shoot. Find out what you like to shoot and continue doing it. The PC parts will make your life easier, but shouldn't interfere with your ability to actually go and shoot. What kind of videos do you think you want to shoot?

:)

Thanks for the answer!
I was afraid that I would need to start over 😀
I am a skydiving junkie, so most of my videos are skydiving stuff :)
This is my first try at editing. I know It sucks, steep learning curve 😀 😀

So lets say I will follow your advice and start over with intel.. Id need to wait for at least a year before I can fork out the cash...
Given my current set up, is there nothing I can do for about 500 - 600 usd that will get me going for now while I save a couple of grand?

Thanks :)
Is there nothing that I can

Going with a I7-4790k will be a lot more affordable that the 5820k. Editing is mostly cpu and ram intensive. What you have now is fine in my opinion as you find out what you want to do and what you enjoy most. I wouldn't go forking over anything until you really get into it. Who knows, you might not enjoy shooting 2-3 months down the road, but once you do decide to really invest your time and money into shooting and editing, The biggest and probably only way to dramatically improve editing time would be going to intel and increasing ram.

If you live near a Microcenter, you could easily get it below that price too.

Solution
what would speed things up would be a fx9590 with a good water cooler.

what your doing is not just cpu intensive.. there is software that is cuda(nvidia) and gcn(amd) accelerated.

i dont know a whole lot about it but i know that gpu acceleration far surpasses anything that is done on the cpu alone.

Cool! Thanks a lot guys!
So I think that Im going to order now 8 more gigs of ram. Looking at these guys, which are the ones I already have:
http://www.computeruniverse.net/en/products/90547518/kingston-hyperx-fury-ddr3-1600-blau.asp
Then Ill save a little an maybe next month Ill upgrade to the processor that you guys sugested and finally in 2 months Ill get the 780ti
I guess this set up should be enough to get me going for at least a year or so while I learn how to use the aoftware properly and see if I get into it.
Thanks a lot guys!

Really appreciate all the help

G

.. And while Im asking.. Do you guys have some advice on how to set up my HD´s for maximal efficency?

Thanks!
