Currently i have an older tower with an-

i7-920 intel processor

p6t asus motherboard which has 6 total slots for RAM

and 6gb of RAM (1333) at the moment

i'm looking to upgrade maybe to like 8-10gb

do i have to replace all the sticks of RAM or can i add in sticks and do they have to be 1333 as well?

well you can use different brands but with the same speed and capacity because if its not the same as the sticks you can get problems, so lets say you have a 2133 and a 1333 stick of ram, the 2133 will be slowed down to 1333 your ram will be increased but not the speed.

i suggest/recommend you buy the same stick, with the same speed and make sure its the same as your stick, most people do the same ram sticks for maximum performance.

Assuming you currently have 3 x 2GB modules, you should just be able to add another three matched modules into the three vacant slots.

Ideally, they would be identical to the three that are in there but the board should be smart enough to choose "lowest common denominator" settings if you mix slightly different types. I'd recommend trying to get the closest match you can, though. Buy a triple-channel kit rather than three separate modules to ensure that the modules are matched with each other.

I'd suggest getting 3 x 2GB for a total of 12GB or 3 x 4GB for 18GB total (if you're running Win7 Home Premium, you won't be able to use more than 16GB, though - Win8/10 are fine). It's probably not really worthwhile getting 3 x 1GB for 9GB total, assuming you can even find 3GB kits.

sorry for the late response and i appreciate your responses gents. i currently have 6 slots total. its been so long since i bought my current sticks i doubt they make them anymore. so a safe bet would be to replace them entirely with a kit with a higher amount of RAM? i was just thinking of adding additional because it would be more cost effective for me to just by another 6-8 GB of RAM instead of 12-16GB.

you could replace them or you could add more sticks, i say get 10 gigs of ram so you get 16 total or upgrade to 8 gb

Getting compatible ram even with the same model and brand is based on luck so i would suggest you to replace the ram completely and getting a 4x4gb pair

ya i think im leaning on just replacing the sticks and getting a set to amount 12-16gb of ram. any suggestions as far as brand models? preferably under $100.

i really appreciate all your guys' help!

Kingston and Corsair are pretty good when it comes to ram.
