So I built a system
Short version
4790k oc at 4.8ghz
h110i gtx cooler
32gb hyper fury x oc at 2200mhz 10-12-12-32 1t command rate.
Current card is 970 ftw as I am awaiting my 980 ti to return from rma
z97a gaming 7 msi MB

So when I first put the system together the firestrike physics score was only about 9200 and I kept seeing same cpus hitting 12k-13k on that score! So I decided to learn to OC. I have got a very stbale Oc setup that maxes temps in the mid 60's while stress testing with prime. My current settings are allowing me to finally get more numbers and I have reached 10615 on my physics score.

Can anyone guide me to things I should change to get those extra numbers I am missing? I read somewhere that I should disable certain things in the bios but I cannot locate where I read that earlier today.

Solution
The physics part of the test does utilize the CPU to render, you are correct.

However in most real-life scenarios your game will use the GPU to render the physics.

I believe it will still be worth giving the GPU a little bit extra power.
I was under the assumption that physics was strictly the cpu , that 3dmark has it established that way. I had the same score previously with my 970 ftw and the 980 ti . Only now overclocking the cpu and ram have I really seen the score change. Ill try oc'ing the gpu in the morning but my hands are really tied until my 980 ti arrives from being rma'd. I also have a waterblock coming in this week to help it reach its full potential :)

Solution
I think we did it!!! (help from a friend overseas, thought I would share)
So I decided to do a fresh install and wipe the slate clean. I reinstalled win 10 and formatted all drives followed that up with updating all drivers. I then put my overclocks back on cpu @ 48 multiplier and 1.275v . The bios says it comes back as 1.283v and cpu-z reads it as 1.273v. Either way it is stable and cool so far.

I then went back to the bios and all I did was change my ram timing to 2133mhz and let the motherboard have everything else on auto for the ram. 12-13-12-35 2t command rate is what it put everything at. ( not sure if I should change that to 1t command rate, what do you think?

I then loaded everything onto my second ssd drive. I reinstalled the corsair software for the h110i gtx as that was the only way to get the driver to run. I then deleted the software because there is no real need for it as it runs very smooth with the fan control on the motherboard and I could care less about changing the led color on it lol.

And finally I ran fs :)
My physics score went to 13451!!!!! I was around 9200 and after overclocking I still was only hitting 10400ish.

old physics scores:
when I tried oc'ing to 4.6ghz

And then when I tried other oc's

I really think the fresh install helped as well as all the settings that you suggested to use!

I did not overclock the 970 ftw as it is only going to be in my system for another week or so, but I may get tempted to this evening lol

Oh and my cpu batch # is X517A438

Perhaps it can reach 5ghz one day too :)

Thanks again for all this help and soon I will be learning how to do another custom bios for the watered 980 ti , I cannot wait.
