I'm a gamer, who mostly plays WoW, but I do pick up other, more PC intensive, titles on occasion (Here's looking at you, Wolfenstein!). I would like a rig that can chew through WoW on max settings and give me 50-60 fps at 1080p or 1440p all around. I'm considering the following...

- I'd like to pick up either a RTX 2060 Super or 2070 Super for starters.

- I've been Intel all my life, and would take some persuading to switch, but it's not out of the question. My last desktop CPU purchase was an i5-3570K, so there's been a lot to hit the market since and I really need help finding a sweet fit that isn't overkill and wasting money. The i7-9700K seems like a solid choice but, again, will need guidance.

- I would like to run 32GB of dual-channel RAM (is quad better for any reason?). The max speed (e.g. DDR4-2400) is determined by the CPU alone? Or does the Motherboard have to be taken into consideration as well?

- I'll probably use an M.2 SSD and a good ol' WD 1TB Black/Blue as storage. Suggestions on the SSD? I look at benchmarks and am never sure what I should be aiming for.

- Let's use an ATX board, I'm done with trying to build m-ATX systems. I don't want to have to worry about airflow.

- Not sure if I'd overclock. Potentially the GPU, and maybe the CPU, but I always worry about shortening their lifespan.

- PSU: Well, yeah, it'll depend.

- I ballparking things at this point, so let's say my budget is $1000-$1500. I'll figure out the case/monitor outside this budget as I have some spares and may decide to use those.

Let me know if you have any questions. All constructive advice is welcome! :)

Thanks!

Solution
With the prices of SSD's being so cheap I would just go SSD and no HDD.

Here's my recommendation for a Intel Build.

Mind filling out the rest?

Approximate Purchase Date:

Budget Range:
$1,000 - $1,500

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming (WoW)

Parts Not Required:

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:

Country:

Parts Preferences:
Intel

Overclocking (CPU/GPU):

Monitor Resolution:
1080P/1440P

Additional Comments:

To answer some of your questions, I would go for the Intel 660P M.2 NVMe SSD as its quite fast for the price. Dual channel performs better then quad channel if your going with a i7.

The AMD is better for the long run since the CPU/MB supports PCIE 4.0 and there's another generation of CPU's coming out before AMD changes socket.

Either build would play WoW well on 1080P/1440P or a 21:9 variant as well as other newer games.

Case recommendation.

Ok, what monitor do you have now or are planning on using?

Reason I ask is because if you don't have one picked out yet I would highly suggest going 2560x1080P or 3440x1440P as WoW natively supports 21:9 and looks gorgeous on a IPS or VA ultra wide.

My 1080p is 16:10 and 1440p is 16:9.

I'll browse some 21:9 and see if they break the bank. :p

Hey, sorry to necro my own thread, but I'm getting around to most likely making this purchase in the next couple days. I need some clarification on a few things. (I've decided to go with the AMD setup)

The G. Skill RAM lists that it is "Optimized compatibility with DDR4-compatible Intel Core platforms " (link). Just wanted to verify it's AMD compatible. Also, it talks about XMP 2.0 support, but that's just for Intel processors, correct?

I can't seem to confirm whether or not the MB has on-board wifi. If not, which way should I go..."better" board, or same board and a wifi card or something? Please provide suggestions. Maybe this, for example, though I realize it's expensive so something cheaper would be great.

EDIT: Wi-fi runs at 5GHz

Is there anything else anyone is seeing on this that may need to be addressed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The memory should work on that board and it says on the Newegg site that it does have wifi although there are cheaper options. This Asrock is a solid board especially for the price and should be fine for your build. It should support the 3rd gen CPU's right out of the box but double check the CPU your getting with the CPU support list (make sure it falls under ALL).

Thanks for the suggestion! I noticed it's a m-ATX board. Any way to know definitively whether or not I'll run into clearance issues with the Wraith Prism cooler and the RAM listed above?
