Looking to replace all in one inkjet

Hi;
My 90+ yr old dad runs a home business. He has a very low print requirement - maybe 50 pages/month.
He had a 9yr old Canon PIXMA MP530 all in one inkjet printer that just stopped working. I have determined that the machine is un-repairable, so I am looking for a replacement.
He has an old HP laserjet 1200 that still works, but it has been acting up with increasing frequency, so cannot be depended on.

I have done a lot of shopping/research, and am not at all happy with what I have found.
It appears that all inkjet printers are of very low quality, with manufacturers selling them at no profit or a loss just to sell their expensive ink.
This leaves the user frustrated and angry trying to deal with the many jams and errors while trying to get even the smallest print job done.
Maybe laser printers are not as bad in this respect, but again - I have had no luck in finding anything - especially an all in one - that can be called "reliable".

I think my dad can do ok with a monochrome printer, but looking at all in one monochrome laser machines I find pretty much the same problems as with the color units. Many problems, poor quality, and expensive toner.
I'm not sure if any of the manufacturers have gone to a proprietary system for their laser cartridges like they (HP to be specific) have for their inkjet tanks, where only their own branded cartridges/tanks will work in the printer.

Perhaps I would be better off buying separate components; printer, scanner, fax dongle?
I know that route would be more expensive, but if purchased over time, it might fit my dad's budget. And speaking of budget, my dad doesn't want to spend more than about $200 on this all in one machine. That said, it appears that even the more expensive machines have problems.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

I bought this Brother laser all in one w/new toner a several months back (maybe 6) and so far its been dependable and have never had to 'restart' it. It takes a normal laser printer time to warm up but is otherwise responsive to network print requests which is how I have it connected (wired) and prints fast and just as quiet as my 6 yr old Samsung $50 laser did.

btw I paid $30 less then this back then, {nice sale} :)

My print needs are even less then your fathers these days and I have not even went thru the started toner (5-600 pgs) yet.
Every 10 reams of paper or so there is a photo conductor to change. I don't plan on ever having to need to do that. LoL
