Looking to upgrade cpu/motherboard

At the moment I'm running a pretty old cpu (i7 950 @3.07ghz (bloomfield architecture)).
It's a 1366 socket but I'd like to upgrade. I'd either want the new intel skylake 6700 and buy an 1151 motherboard, or get 4790k and 1150 motherboard. The first option is a bit of a hassle because I would also need to get DDR4 RAM (around 115 euros extra), so I'm wondering if the performance will be much better versus the price. Maybe it's an option to wait til DDR4 is cheaper and maybe a new 1151 cpu is released? idk. What should I do?

for the difference in performance VS total price you will have to pay, i would go to the 4790K.

in my opinion, the small increase in performance (~15% as people say) the skylake system brings, is not worth the extra $$$. At least, not yet.

But like hang-the-9 said, this posted is aimed at the thought you REALLY want to upgrade. That is up to you to decide.

stick with the 4790k or if you want better gaming performance go with the 4690k because i7's are all optimized for rendering and the new skylake processors have almost 0% performance increase so it's not worth it =)

Why do you want to upgrade in the first place? Even though the CPU you have is older, it's still a good CPU, especially if you have it paired with a video card that matches it. Unless you are running lots of video encoding or other CPU intensive tasks and need the extra speed, an upgrade is not needed for a while.
