So I've just upgraded my GPU (GTX 950 to 5600xt) and it's working great. My CPU is getting a bit old though (I5-6500) - it's still working fine but I know it will start showing it's age soon enough. I have the ASUS z170 pro gaming motherboard with the 1151 chipset meaning the best available cpu I can put on it is the I7-7700 which seems to be pretty pricey for a marginal upgrade. I've noticed that the AMD Ryzen 5 2600x has noticably better numbers than the 7700 and is at least half the price; AMD seems to be a better value categorically than Intel right now.

Question... should I ditch my mobo and get one with an AMD chipset and, if so, which chipset? I'm looking to set myself up so that I won't need another upgrade for at least 3 years.

Before you answer, I tend not to play the AAA games right after they release. Unless XCOM 3 comes out, I'm generally playing games that are at least 2 years old.

If youre going down the amd line i highly suggest the ryzen 5 3600x /3600.
Its a good upgrade from your 6th gen i5 as the ryzen 5 3600 is a 6 core 12 thread cpu so it will hold its own even after a few years of time.
Keep in mind the 3600x is unlocked so you can OC.
If you dont want to use as much cash grab the ryzen 5 2600x/2600.
Best motherboard for the ryzen 5 3600 cpu is either the MSI B450m tomahawk for budget or the ASROCK B450m pro4 for micro atx and the MSI B450 Gaming pro carbon ac for the ryzen 5 3600x if you plan on oc'ing.
For the ryzen 5 2600 the ASRock B450 pro4 is budget friendly and will suit your needs perfectly.
Hopefully my answer helped.
Good luck with your upgrade mate! Cheers!

Thanks for the reply! No, I've never overclocked my rig; the i5, gtx950 and current mobo were all enough to run xcom 2 (heavily) modded and deus ex mankind divided on high settings without overclocking or wigging out.

My tower is full size - is the MSI B450 gp the one to go with? Along with the 3600x? I don't want to get a mobo that I'll have to change again to upgrade the cpu on the next go-round.

Thanks again!

Hi man its me again! Sorry for replying late im busy most of the day.
If money isnt a problem yeah sure go ahead grab the ryzen 7 3700x, it can play rdr2 on high with 40+fps with your gpu. The ryzen 7 will be better for longevity but me personally i would grab the ryzen 5 as the difference is not too big and the price of ryzen 7 in my country is a scam its so expensive! If youre getting the new processor check your current memory and sew if it works in the x570 aswell to make sure it will work.
Tl:dr grab the ryzen 7 if cash isnt a problem and grab the ryzen 5 for a smaller budget.
Good luck mate!

Sorry for the late reply. The 5 3600x is $220 vs the 7 3700x is $275 - I don't know what the prices are in your country but I'm happy to go with the 7. It seems like a sizable performance boost for not a lot more money.
