Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my existing PC so that games like the Assassin's Creed franchise will play smoothly. It's pretty choppy now and near impossible to pick any locks. I'd like to keep the budget under $500 if possible.

Any guidance is appreciated. Please take it easy on this noob.

Here are the specs:
System Manufacturer ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.
System Model M51BC
System Type x64-based PC
System SKU SKU
Processor AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor, 3500 Mhz, 3 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 0402, 2013-09-09
SMBIOS Version 2.7
Embedded Controller Version 255.255
BIOS Mode UEFI
BaseBoard Manufacturer ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.
BaseBoard Product M51BC
BaseBoard Version Rev 1.xx

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 640

RAM: Kingston ASU16D3LU1KBG/8G 1x8GB

HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB

Let me know if I've missed anything.

Thank you.

Which games specifically are you trying to play? Assassin's Creed games have been around for the decade. The newest games are going to tough with this rig; this was an entry-level 2012-2013 build and you've waited too long to start incremental upgrades. At this point, you'll need a new CPU, MB, RAM, GPU, and likely a new PSU. You can squeeze out a little more performance with a 1650, but don't expect miracles.

^ That pretty much says it.

If you don't want to buy something that can be used into the future for a moment you might could piece something together ~$300, but would be dead end for the most part. I would focus something like $500 on an entry AM4 rig with good bones to build on.
