I have had this same 660 in my PC ever since I got it around four years ago. It's served me quite well and I didn't mind that I've had to lower my settings recently as some of the newer games don't run as well anymore. The issue is that I believe that it might be starting to fail, as playing any game more intensive than Hearthstone causes really bad stuttering and lagging of display and sound to the point where I get a BSoD. The issue doesn't lie in any drivers as they are all up to date and this only started happening a few days ago. I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade seeing as I can't really play over 3/4 of my games in this condition. What would be a solid choice for me to upgrade to? (preferably an Nvidia and something that can fit in an X51 model)

Thank you for taking the time to read this, it's my first post on this site.

Solution
I7 3770k with a gtx970, and even at max usage of 99% on that gpu, the cpu has yet to get over 55%. You can easily run a gtx1080 on that cpu of yours, no worries on bottlenecks.

For 1080p a gtx1060 6Gb is plenty mostly, same for a Rx480, those 2 cards butt heads constantly. If really wanting max performance in any game at 1080p, a gtx1070, but most consider this a waste of money just to cover a few games.

Thank you for the possibilities. Based on my CPU how could I tell if a card might bottle neck it?

Sorry for taking a bit of time to answer. I did a bit of research and the i7 should not bottle neck the Rx 480 and if it does, it will not significantly. What sort of games do you want to play on it?

I'd play Dota 2, Dead by daylight, Dark Souls III. So games that have the potential to be higher end but don't need to be. I'd prefer to be able to play them on high settings, but not quite ultra.

I would go for the Rx 480 8 gb-

I hope I have been helpful and I hope everything goes well.

This is the option that I'd also recommend. The GTX 1060 will give you a solid performance boost and has a nice price to performance ratio. Your 3770 will not bottleneck any GPU on the market currently.
