Hi Guys,

I am currently looking to upgrade my graphics card, memory and monitor and I’m looking for some advice. With the upgrades I have listed below can I expect to see a significant improvement over my current setup or is the amount of money this will cost not really worth it?

My current specs are:

Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E (LGA1366)
Memory: 6.00GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 534MHz (8-8-8-20)
GPU: GeForce GTX 570
CPU: Intel Core i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20GHz

The graphics card I have been looking at is a: MSI NVIDIA GTX 970 Gaming Twin Frozr HDMI DVI-I DP Graphics Card (4GB, PCI Express, DDR5, 256 Bit) which has got a lot of good reviews on Amazon and I'm sure it's compatible with my board.

The memory should be the easy part as I was just going to buy more of the same type, or replace what I have with PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) which I think my board supports, after reading the ASUS web site.

And finally the monitor I have been reading about is: BenQ XL2720Z 27 inch 144hz LED gaming monitor which again has great reviews. I am totally open to suggestions about the monitor.

Sorry if I should of split this up into 3 separate posts and will if neccessary, but any suggestions or information would be very much appreciated. The specs of my motherboard are here http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P6X58DE/specifications/

Yes a 970 would be a big Bump and give you a lot more fps

But I would either wait for the gtx 1070 which will have probably 8gb vs 3,5gb and will be more efficient

If you are in a hurry then I would get the r9 390 cause it has 8gb

Whats your PSU?

A GTX 970 should be big upgrade, but bear in mind the current CPU is a little slow by current standards, to get the best out of the faster graphics card it'll be a good idea to overclock the current CPU.

Those old/er i7s' don't benefit too much from fast memory, don't expect a big boost in performance from the memory upgrade.

I'm now a firm advocate of fast displays but I'm on a 27" 1080 display and it's a little too big for the rez, either downsize to 24" or move up to a 1440 monitor because you may very well find that at that screen size the display is a little too coarse.

I just checked and my psu is a corsair cx600 so its 600w. I do have a corsair liquid cooler on the psu so overclocking would be an option, although I've never overclocked before and would probably end up with a pile of ash!

while I was checking the psu i noticed that the 6gb of ram is made up from 3 stick of 2gb so I suppose I could just buy 3 stick of the same MHz value but with a higher capacity, maybe 4 or 8, not sure whats available.

a 27 inch monitor probably is a bit on the large size for the space it would be sitting in so down sizing would be the best option. I take it the gtx 970 would be perfectly ok running a 144hz monitor?

I don't know why that guy is telling you to wait for the next GPU. I would just get the 970, it is a great card. Yes,it will go with a 144Hz monitor quite well.

Depending on what kinds of games you play, the 144Hz monitor may or may not be used to it's full potential. If you play games like CS:GO, League, or Dota 144 FPS will probably be achievable.

If you are talking about games like The Witcher 3, GTA V, and Fallout 4 it's not going to happen. The 970 can't play at 144 FPS in those games even with a brand new, overclocked i7-6700k.

Your processor is pretty old. There are a lot of games where it might be good enough for 60 FPS but it won't be able to hold those high framerates for your 144Hz monitor.
