Looking to upgrade gaming rig.

I am looking to upgrade my gaming rig for upcoming games that could last a a couple of years down the line also. Im loing to run games at 1080p 60fps at medium-high settings.

My current set up is:
Sapphire 2GB 7890 Ghz Edition Crossfire
i5 2500k @ 3.3Ghz
Sabertooth Z77
8GB DDR3 1333Mhz Ram
750 Watt PSU
250GB SSD
1TB HDD

£600 is what im looking to spend, I was hoping that a CPU and GPU wonuld only be needed? But if im wrong could someone tell what I would need.

I was looking at i5 4960K and a 8GB 390 X for just over £600. But would I be able to just put the CPU into the current mobo?

Upgrading to an i5-4960K would require a new motherboard.

i5-2500K uses an LGA1155 socket.
i5-4960K uses an FCLGA1150 socket.

Get a new graphics card for now (or soon - I would probably wait until Pascal releases at this point); upgrade CPU later. You can push the OC higher on that 2500K and still be able to play the latest games at ~50-60 FPS for at least another year or two, at which time, there will be even better things to upgrade to.

Might need a better cooler in the meantime.

the newer intel cpu over the z77 mb and cpu are not that much in speed. if the rig is working fine right now i would wait for the newer amd and nvidia gpu and put one of them in. then save money for when your rig mb/cpu kicks the bucket then upgrade to the newest intel cpu and mb then.

No, they are two different sockets. i5-4690K is LGA1150 while the i5-2500K is LGA1155.

I see you have a Z77 motherboard. I would suggest you get a good cooler and overclock the hell out of that CPU.

What is your PSU? The exact brand? Make sure it is high quality so it is good enough for overclocking.

With the money saved on not upgrading your CPU, you can get a Fury for a graphics card.

That is a pretty good power supply. I think you should b fine.

Overclocking a CPU take time as it is step-by-step little-by-little process. Even if you mess up, you can always clear CMOS and start over. I think it would be a good experience to do it yourself.

H80i? Hmmm. I was thinking air cooling. I am not a fan of liquid coolers. Something like H5, Noctua U14S, or Dark Rock 3 arer good and quiet choices - if you choose one of them make sure your case can accommodate them.

Yes, 390X or a Fury will work just fine.
