Looking to Upgrade GPU

I'm looking to upgrade my GPU in anticipation of some games coming in the near future (i.e. GTA 5). I'd like to stay around $200 but I can spend more if I have to. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

For $200 i would look at a R9 280X or a GTX 960. For a little more you might be able to get a R9 290 or 290x.

gtx 960 is around 200 dollars(mini version is 200 and full size ones are about 220-230) its the best nivida card at that price point currently... definitely get a gtx 960...

That is the best option. 960 has Maxwell microarchitecture which is a plus. R9 290 or 290x will give you better performance for lower power-consumption efficiency. In OP's position, I would probably go with the 290/290x

It's a 21.5" acer (can't remember what model at the moment), native is 1920x1080 but I have it at like 1440x900... is there any downside to running a 1920x1080 monitor at 1440x900 just out of sheer preference?

Yes monitors will generally look worse if there not running at there native resolution. And the gtx 960 will push 1080p no problem so there is no reason not to be at 1080p.
