Looking to upgrade GPU

I have a system that is about two to three years old, and I'm looking to upgrade the GPU. Currently the computer has the following (running on 16GB of RAM):

SAPPHIRE 100352-3L Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

Intel Core i5-4670K Haswell 3.4GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I54670K

The system is primarily used for gaming (forgive me for not being able to be more specific). What cards would be a significant improvement and still work well with the i5 I have in it? Thanks so much for any help!

Do you have a budget? If not, you could get the 390x for AMD or if you want to go Nvidia, get the 980. If you're on a budget, please tell me and I will have more recommendations.

R9 390 is the cheapest card I would call a worthwhile upgrade, then the R9 390x/gtx 980, then the R9 Fury/R9 Nano

r9-390 would be your best bet. the 7950 though is no slouch and is equal to the r9-380. amd just keeps re-branding and re-configuring the 7950 into new packages.

Thanks for the advice! I think the 390x is a little out of my price range, but the 390 is something that I could swing. Is the difference between the two fairly significant?

^lol. yes, there is a significant performance difference. somewhere around 30-40% depending on the game.

your 7950 would be virtually the same(slightly lower) as the xfx 280 they have at the bottom of that chart. the 390 would be virtually the same(slightly higher) than the 290 they have at the top of the chart.

ahh. yeah, for the most part they perform the same. the 390x may allow two to three settings bumped up higher, but not really a huge difference.
