Looking to upgrade gpu!

Ok so I am looking to upgrade my gpu and I've done a bit of research but don't 100% know what I'm doing. The specs for my computer is a dell 8500 (2012) if that helps anyone.
specs:
intel core i7-3770 cpu @ 3.40ghz
ram: 8.00 gb
gpu: geforce gt 620
operating system: windows 10

I'm looking to be able to play games such as cs:go and overwatch, but my computer can't handle it. I'm curious whether or not I could upgrade my graphics card since the computer came with about a 30$ one if it would make a significant difference. Or if to run a fast paced fps game at decent quality it would be a waste. Also if you could let me know what type of gpu my computer could handle and any other upgrade suggestions would be awesome thanks!

You have a good CPU so I would assume that upgrading the GPU would make a difference to your gaming. If you tell us your budget, country and what resolution you will be playing at we can advise you.

What is PSU brand/model of your PC?
You may need a new PSU also for your GPU upgrade.

What is your power supply? There is a chance the one that came with your pc won't be sufficient.

Yes, the Video card has to do all the "Eye candy" and the gt620 is not up to it, the Power supply 12Vdc output/wattage needs to be looked at, for your New GPU choice too.

I live in the United States and I'm willing to spend up to 300 on a new gpu (maybe a little more if the next step up is a little over 300) and I generally play on 1600x900.

As the other posters said, could you post us the exact name and model of your power supply. If you turn your PC off and open up the side panel you should be able to see.

There are better GTX 970 for a wee bit more but I suggested this as you may need to upgrade PSU as well.

It is best to wait on this, the 1070 is coming out shortly, and the 970 will experience a price drop, then you could choose between a much cheaper 970, or a more powerful 1070.

Hello... Thx for the PICs... the PS lists three +12Vdc circuits 18/16/8(cpu) amp... The 970 wiki's at 145 watts TDP. You will need to determine the GPU CARDs Power Connector input types and Look at your PS Pcie/+12vdc connectors, too determine what adaptors/wiring changes will need to be made to Power the GPU from the PS. B )
