I'm looking to upgrade the memory in my desktop PC from 8gb to 16gb. The PC is for gaming. My mobo is an ASUS z87-PLUS

The current memory I have is 2x4gb DDR3

Can I save a little money and just get the same memory kit again to have 4x4gb for 16gb total? OR is it substantially better for me to just to upgrade to a 2x8gb memory kit?

Thanks!

Try doing a search on "memory selector". Various manufacturers have small programs that can interrogate your computer and then suggest products that will work with your MB. Some memory sticks come with heat sinks (often called "spreaders") and others do not. So, you'll have to pick according to how you intend to clock the memory. As a precaution, I would note the maximum voltage the chips are designed for and set the BIOS accordingly.
