Hello. I am thinking about upgrading some components in my computer but I'm unsure of what I am looking to buy will be compatible with what I currently have.

Current Specs:

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-4100 Quad-Core Processor (4CPUs) 3.6gz
Motherboard: M5A97 PRO
RAM: 8gb RAM
Powered by: 750w supply

I am looking to upgrade my CPU to an Intel i5 but from what I have found it is not compatible with my current motherboard. Is there an AMD processor that is just as powerful as an i5 that would work with my current setup or will I have to purchase a new motherboard as well?

If I do have to purchase a new motherboard for the i5/new AMD processor, how would I know if purchasing this would fit with the rest of my components, such as my GPU?

Any referrals to components/recommendations would be greatly appreciated, as is your time to answer my questions.

Thanks!

As for the GPU, that will work with any motherboard really. the motherboard can not work with an i5 as i5 cpu's can use lga 1151 and 1150 sockets and the FX 4100 you use is a AM3+ socket. so if you wanted an i5 you must get either a LGA 1150 Socket or 1151 socket motherboard depending on what type of i5 you get. the RAM can differ to. Lets say you get a i5-6600k that is a 1151 socket which can only use DDR4 Ram, your current system DDR3 Ram for sure, which is not compatible with a LGA 1151 socket motherboard. but a 1150 socket motherboard may be compatible with it. so lets say an i5-4690k is a lga 1150 socket so that would work with your ram. power supply will work regardless.

To sum it up, My recommendation would be rough to give to...

IF you want to game and multitask (web browsing) playing music watching videos etc while gaming, I'd say upgrade to a FX 8350 CPU which is basically the best in slot AMD processor for the price at the moment. or WAIT till AMD Zen comes out which will be even more costly.

BUT

If you want to only GAME without any other multi tasking things up, Skype web browsing etc. Then go with an i5, Id say 4690k might be your best bet because you most likely wouldn't need to replace ram so it would be cheaper (maybe), You'd still need to replace the motherboard. But IMO you can't beat the price value of the i5-6600k which is a LGA 1151 socket, so you would need new motherboard and DDR4 RAM
