About case dimension and GPU size:
1. I would really try to find out your case brand and type first, before buying a new one.
2. You can also try to find those smaller form cards e.g. KFA2 GTX1070 Katana, Gigabyte GTX1070 Mini ITX OC, etc.
Yes, the cooling solution is not that optimal but if space is your issue, you have to live with it.

Its a 6 yrs old machine, so before any changes, are your parts in good condition?
For safest move, get gtx 1070. It will max out everything on 1080p, while gtx 1060 is now barely enough....

Even though 4 core cpu will slow down some intensive games, but shouldnt lag

I am currently using an i7 2600k with an RX 580 8GB
I max everything out @ 1080p I get well over 90fps in all the games I play, pubg, overwatch, etc

If you need to upgrade anything, without spending a fortune, maybe upgrade the cpu a bit and go for a 580/1060

Also you may need to upgrade your PSU

I see several possible options,
1. look for second-handed I7 2600k
2. go for newer proc e.g. R5 2600 or I5 8400, mobo and ram. This is quite costly.
3. look for better GPU but pick minimum gtx1060 6GB or RX580.

For nr. 2 and 3, check your PSU first, if it is still strong enough and still in good condition after all those years. You might need a new PSU too.

You can pick
(1 or 2)
and/or
(3)

so the cpu that is currently in is okay and wont matter if the gpu is 1070?

yes, 10gb of ram. so upgrading gpu to something strong that is in budget would be enough for 60fps low-medium graphics 1080p gaming? what would have the most impact on fps in those games and will my cpu not have the most impact so the gpu can 'carry'?

It is a bit difficult to really tell.
Games are written differently.
Some games are more processor dependent, while the majority is more GPU dependent.

The thing is however by your rig.
GTX1050 is still ok, not among the best but still ok.
Your I5 2400 is already quite old and already a noticeable bottlneck for e.g. 1070 on some new proc heavy AAA games.

Now back to which one you should upgrade first.
On GPU heavy games, going for GTX1060 or higher will do just fine, even with 1070.
On CPU/Processor bound games, going for better processor is better.
For the longer run, I would upgrade the processor first and the GPU later.

BTW, I would leave PUBG out of the topic. This game is badly optimized.
For Rainbow 6 and ARMA 3, you need to upgrade both proc and GPU to gain more enjoyable FPS but your I5 2400 should be the bigger limiting factor.
This is also another reason to go for the processor upgrade first.

thanks for the very well built answer. i will definetly go find a good cpu and go for that, i am concerned about my case not being able to fit for a gpu like 1060 or 1070 . is there any way to check that? ill have to check my case model which will probably be hard because its really old and stickers are worn .

Full Specs i7 2600k
16Gb Ram
Rx580 8gb
Asus Sabertooth P67
Thermaltake Smart 600W
NZXT h500i case

I could run some tests for you to give you an FPS on this machine.

As for card, just measure from your card slot to the end of your case, then look up a GPU that is shorter than that space.

my bad, i only checked a local shop's website which is overpriced. thanks for the comment. although i think my case is just too small for the gpu so ill check and i might buy the whole setup
