I have an i3 3220 looking to upgrade. I have an Asrock z77 Extreme4 and a GTX 970. I feel that my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU pretty hard. I need some suggestions for whether or not to just buy a CPU or just buy a new MOBO and CPU.

Hello... http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-3220+@+3.30GHz
they have used i7 Xeons on the Bay for that MB for http://www.ebay.com/sch/CPUs-Processors/164/i.html?_from=R40&_sop=15&_nkw=e3%201240v2&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=3&_trksid=p2045573.m1684

they are a Low cost, serverboard used, i7 3770 without a GPU/IGT.

This company has a lot of these e3 1230 v2 $175

There are also i5 versions too... e3 1220 V2...

Solution
Your current CPU is a socket 1155. You can replace it with any other cpu compatible with that socket.
Here are the passmark ratings of socket 1155 cpus.

This is just one benchmark. And it does not include overclocking, the 2500k for example runs by default at 3.5ghz but is frequently overclocked to 4ghz or higher.

I would not spend too much on a new CPU because your socket is no longer supported. Consider swapping out the CPU, MB and ram for a new Skylake i5.

I sort of have the same issue but in a way different situation. Most people recommend to ditch lga 1155 because it is becoming obsolete fast with all the new intel processors having better upgradability paths, as well as more motherboards available for years to come. If you don't want to spend a lot right now, then you can probably pick up a 3000 series i5 or i7, whether it is K unlocked or not IMO depends on what cooler you have since usually, the performance gains of overclocking are often balanced out by the better motherboard and cooling solution required for a stable clock. You have a good board though which makes it hard to choose an older cpu and overclock or get a brand new 1151 and cpu thats more relevant.

Thank you for your time!
