Looking to upgrade my processor for gaming needs.

Hey all, im looking to grab a new processor as my old one doesnt cut it for gaming anymore. Gets choppy in certain games. Im looking to go from

AMD Athlon II x2 260 3.2ghz

What ive been looking at is this one.

that is a great cpu for the money, great for gaming

I agree with the man above, the FX series is an amazing CPU.
If you have the cash, go for the eight core, and go get an H80 Cooler so you can overclock it and deal with the heat.

I dont so much need to overclock it yet. As long as its a massive upgrade from my old one.

"facedesk" true lol, ive just looked up the 8 coure, its a bit more expensive "lows of £114". But i dont think i can strech that far.

I also recomend the FX series. I have an FX6300 which will give you one fps less than an i5 and is much cheaper than an i5.

What would the FPS difference be like with the 6 core one linked?, i use a MSI GTX 550 ti GPu, and my CPU is above.

Just checked my MoBo's CPU compatability, it doesnt seem to be able to have the bulldozer. Can take the phenom II x6 though.

I would just go with the phenom, not worth another am3+ mobo and the pain of registering windows again after the upgrade.

what gpu do you have? In most games the GPU is where the bottle neck is not the cpu so it depends.

Hard to say as hardware configurations can be highly variable.
to get a general idea of the CPU check passmark's benchmarks.

FX-6100 = ~5409
x2 260 = ~1803

In my experience:
Any CPU that scores over 5k is good for gaming
After 5k the GPU is the bottleneck

Can't really predict what the FPS difference will be though.
The CPU upgrade should definitely help.

Your motherboard has the 955, 1045t, and 945 in it's compatability list. All should be in your budget.

Those are your best bet, the 955 would be best because it is fully unlocked for overclocking.


But you cant go wrong with any of the three.
