Looking to upgrade my R9 280 don't know what to upgrade to

Currently have an i5 4460 and a XFX r9 280. Been wanting to upgrade my GPU and been looking at the 290x/390/970. I have an EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified PSU so i'm not sure if i'm going to need a new PSU if i get an AMD card, especially the 290x since when i enter it into a wattage calculater i get 475W. I will be gaming on 1080p. What card do you suggest i get?

Best value on that resolution currently is GTX 970/R9 390. Either of those will work on a 500W supply. I have a GTX 970 on that exact same EVGA 500W PSU you got

You'll need to get a stronger PSU to run one of the AMD cards but at 1080 res the GTX970 usually has the edge over the R9 290/290X and runs right alongside the R9 390.
Much as I like AMD, in your case I'd go directly to a GTX970, despite its lower 4Gb memory over the R9 390s 8Gb it is a card with a long life ahead of it and there's no competition when it comes to power and temperatures: Nvidia wins hands down.
