in my current system I have a 4770k on an asus z97-a (i think for the mobo), with a gtx 1080 for the gpu. my question is this, should I just get a devils canyon (4790k) or save my pennies and go with the 6700k with a new mobo and ram. I think That I should go with the 6700k for the future proofing but I would really like to get the opinion of the forum.

thanks

I would definitely not do either. The 4790k may overclock slightly higher than the 4770k, but it may not. There would be very little performance improvement. The 6700k performs maybe 15% better. That's a huge expense for what may not be noticeable most of the time. As far as future proofing, the 4770k and 6700k are on the same tier. If a program won't run will with one of those it won't with the other either.
neither of those choices will result in much of a real world improvement. If you really really want to upgrade for no other reason than because you feel like it. I would say just get the devil's canyon and save the rest of your money for a better upgrade a few years from now.
