Hello!

I am considering upgrading my X58 MOBO and CPU to a more modern setup... I do play games frequently - but I am trying to keep within a modest budget. I'd like to spend around 300-400 for the upgrades. Here is what I currently have:

I am likely going to upgrade my GPU to a 1660 ti, but after I get the new MOBO and CPU.

Does it make sense to even upgrade the MOBO and CPU? I feel like they are quite old at this point.

Anyway, Sorry if I am being a noobie and not following some forum rules. I would appreciate any advice and.

"upgrading my GPU to a 1660ti... so maybe a mobo and cpu that will accommodate that GPU "

That's not just an "upgrade", but rather a whole new PC.

Start here:

And post in the Systems Forum.

I think the thread got merged lol.

Definitely. While you may have and upgrade path with xeons, they are all still very dated/.

CPU trades blows with the I7 8700k (which costs double).
You can omit the cooler if you want as the Ryzen 5 3600 comes with one, but the Gammaxx400 will be better.

Motherboard should be compatable out of the box at this point, but if it isn't you will have to update the bios with a USB stick and the press of a button.

I use a Noctua Cooler right now.

Would it make sense to get an ATX board as opposed to micro ATX. I would like to use my same case - which is a Cooler Master HAF 922

Tough call without knowing what exactly what case and PSU you currently have - but if you are going to re-task the old i7-930 / 12gb system it may be more convenient to use the existing budget to build anew:

This way you just pull out your GPU and the 940 SSD and drop it in here, will be decent for a gaming rig. The old 930, use the other SSD for the OS then get another cheap GPU to get it going. Did something very similar for a neighbor and uses the old i7 for music production (FL studio) and he's very happy with the 2600. Prices are a bit cheaper now the 3600s are out.

Does it have AM4 mounting hardware?

It may. Usually with standoffs moved any ATX case can accept Matx motherboards, but if you are willing to bay $105 for a motherboard it may make sense to pick up the ATX version of the motherboard in the build above.
