With Christmas passed and student finance coming I'm looking at upgrading my rig just to future proof it. At the moment this is what I'm running:
*Asus M4A78LT-M
*Zotac GeForce GTX 660 Ti
*Corsair tx750 PSU
*AMD Phenom 2 x6 1055T (2.8Ghz)
*8 GB RAM (x2 4 sticks)
If you need anymore info just let me know, I use it for gaming primarily and just got the GPU 2 years ago. Really I'd rather spend a lot of money on one thing which will make it much better than get a bunch of slight upgrades. However I only know what's a better CPU and GPU and not sure if it's worthwhile replacing them or not.
So yeah, thank you very much if you've read through that incoherent shite.
I'm going to upgrade to a Gigabyte 970 so really the question boils down to should I get a new motherboard and/or processor?

Solution

That depends on how much you have to spend... The Phenom 2 X6 is about as fast as anything AMD has (the FX 8XXX parts are a bit faster but not noticeably so). I personally don't think you'll have to much issue with that CPU, it may hold the 970 back a bit in older games, but they've aged well thanks to the fact newer games are using more cores better.

If you do want to upgrade you really need to be looking at an current Intel Core i5 to get a worthwhile boost (The Phenom II will easily keep up with i3s).

Ah right, not too good when it comes to processors between AMD and Intel. I've had the Phenom for 3 years now so I didn't know if it would still be up to scratch/worth while upgrading. If it's fine how it is that's great!

You wouldn't happen to be able to suggest a motherboard would you? Just this one is micro ATX and doesn't support USB 3.0, I'm using a Fractal R4 which has them, so may as well put them to use! Also hoping to get some liquid cooling in as the temps raise in the summer and with the GTX 970 on the way I really don't want any problems.

I personally use this board:
http://www.ebuyer.com/393525-asus-m5a97-r2-0-socket-am3-8-channel-audio-atx-motherboard-m5a97-r2-0

That will run your Phenom II fine, but also has the ability to run the newer AMD FX 8xxx chips if you did want to upgrade. It's also got a USB 3 controller on board whilst not being stupidly expensive.

Cheers mate, just gotta wait for it all to arrive so I can mess it all up!
