As of now I have an AMD Radeon RX460 GDDR5

My CPU is an Intel i5-6600K @ 3.5 GHz
Motherboard is a Gigabyte Gaming GA-Z170N-Gaming 5
I currently have 8GB of ram (2 x 4GB DDR4 2133)
PSU is a Corsair CX 430

I was hoping to upgrade to a GTX 1080 ti, but I am under the impression that I should upgrade other components before I do.

Thank you very much.

Yes, you would definitely need to upgrade PSU before going for 1080ti. Ram also calls for upgrade to 16 Gb, but that should be done after GPU change.
460 to 1080 Ti is a hell of a jump. Why did you get a 460 if you need something so much more powerful? I ask because I just want to make sure you know what you're doing. And yeah you'll need the new power supply, and I recommend you install it and test the computer before you do anything else. The Corsair CX line is their budget line, if you can afford a 1080 Ti then you can afford something better. Don't buy another CX.

What resolution and Hz is your monitor? The 1080Ti is suited for 4k 60Hz or 1440p 144Hz. While your cpu is great it will hold a 1080Ti when going for high fps (144Hz) in some more recent cpu heavy games that benefit from more than 4 threads. Not saying its a problem but you would need to manage expectations.

At 4k 60Hz /60fps your cpu won't hold back a 1080Ti.

Also you really need a psu upgrade.

This was my first build, and around the time I made it I did not have the available funds. I am somewhat illiterate when it comes to computer parts so I had some help from friend just to get the basics. Thank you for the tip about CX and any other advice would be much appreciated.

Right now I am sitting on an HP Pavilion 2511x, so I definitely would need to upgrade that as well. Thank you so much.
