Looking to Upgrade - Will it be Enough?

I want to update my graphics card but don't know if it'll be enough to do what I want...

I have a circa 2011 ASUS computer with an Intel i5 64, upgraded Corsair power supply (sorry don't remember wattage) with 8gb of RAM and a GeForce 560ti. I have an old 28" 1080p Samsung monitor that I don't think is doing me any favors.

Right now I can run Witcher 3 in moderate settings to get around 30 fps, and that's in about the high end of what I'd like to do. The 560ti seems to struggle with shadow effects and high levels of filtering at 1080p currently.

I want to upgrade to 1440p and run >40fps; would I be able to do that at medium to high settings with a GeForce 970 FTW? I'm also looking at the Dell 27" ~144Hz 1440p gaming monitor with Gsynch to support it.

Anyone running a similar set-up able to tell me if this GPU will be beefy enough to support the resolution I'm targeting with games like Witcher 3, Overwatch, etc, on moderate to high settings with a decent framerate?

Witcher 3 is brutal on video cards. Their no reason to spend the money on a 144HZ monitor when you can't get anywhere close to that many FPS. For a 2K monitor your really going to need a GTX 980. My best advice would be wait and get a non reference GTX 1070 when they come out.
