Howdy, howdy....
Here are my specs;
Windows 10 home
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU
16GB ram, could not find the speeds but do have timings 16-18-18-18
AS Rock B550 Phantom Motherboard
MSI RTX 260 Super
Seagate Hard drive ST4000D
Samsung 970 Evo 500gb
Coolermaster Masterwatt 650w PSU
ACER 32 inch ED320QRS 1080 monitor
Viewsonic VX2458 1080 monitor

I was wondering whether my present set up is ample enough to consider buying a new GPU without knee capping the graphics card in terms of performance. If my rig can support a modest GPU upgrade within PSU limits and case specifications what would you recommend for a budget of $1000 AUD approximately, and any additional chump change when selling on my used RTX 2060 super

For any GPU recommendations please keep close to the dimensions of the RTX 2060 super as I do not know exactly how much room I have in my case to play with, so to be safe stick to the height, width and length dimensions of the MSI RTX 2060 super.

Thanks.

Wait until August when the RTX 4060 is due for release.

Definitely a plenty modern enough platform not worth upgrading frkm.

I'd upgrade the GPU and maybe then consider upgrading the CPU to another am4 chip. A 5800x3d is still not too far from the top of the fastest gaming CPUs out there, and a 5600 is cheap and a good upgrade still.

I don't know if those who replied saw your budget, because they were way under it and only suggesting modest upgrades.

Assuming you're working on the theory it's better to buy a GPU which will last you many years, rather than one you'll need to replace again in a couple of years, you could easily find an RTX 4070 in your budget range, and possibly even an RX 7900 XT.

Will your system "knee cap" it, at 1080p, absolutely. But you can crank up the settings to ultra and enjoy. If you next upgrade your monitor or CPU, at least you'll have a GPU that's up to the task.

Your PSU is only just big enough for these GPUs, but thankfully your CPU, or possible upgrades like the 5800X3D, are very power efficient, so you'll be fine. As for size if card, it's better if you measure how much room you have and check the size of any card you're looking to buy.

For 1000, I see the point. I’m in the USA so prices here probably don’t translate directly since you said AUD. But for 1000 here, I’d consider since you are on 1080p still, maybe look at a decent 27 inch or so 1440p screen, then something like a 6950xt. That would still be a higher upgrade than the 6700xt or 6800xt but get you onto a screen where your cpu won’t limit you as bad and will give you a good visual upgrade as well. Although as the poster above said, a 7900xt should last a few years. But that gpu would be overkill for 1080p I think.

Your current system is good. You could update the mobo bios and slot in a 5800X3D later on if you feel that you are not hitting 100+ fps in CPU limited games.

Regarding the GPU, since you monitor is a 1080p 165hz model and if you are not planning on upgrading that - you can look at the RX 6750XT. There should be some good price cuts and it performs better than 4060, close to 4060ti.

So 6750Xt or the 6800/6800XT if the price drops are significant.

If you plan on upgrading your monitor to 1440p, you will need atleast a 4070. the 6950XT is good from AMD, but you will need a quality 850W PSU.

In my opinion gpu over cpu in this case..
3600x is old but still viable if your looking at around $1000aud id be looking for new 6800xt i would recommend a 6900 or 6950xt but the 650w psu is a bit low ..( min 850w with the 6900 or 6950 )
that said a great system would be a 6800xt a red dragon one at pc case gear is currently $900 aud and a 750w psu then try to sell the 2060 ..
in a few months look at a 5800x3d or at the very least a 5600x will be a great upgrade !!
b550 will work fine for the 5000series cpu's just update bios first
