Looking to upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my CPU, as I feel it is pretty old and is a needed upgrade and wanted to know if you think the upgrade would be worth it.

Current pc specs:

i5 760 CPU
ASRock H55M Pro Motherboard
8GB Corsair Vengence DDR3 RAM
AMD 7950 Gfx Card

I was looking to upgrade my cpu to a i7 4770k, do you think the jump will be worth it and will I see a big performance jump? I mostly use my pc for gaming, playing Arma 3 alot recently and my fps is pretty bad on some servers (15-20) on standard settings.

I understand I would need a motherboard upgrade too if I decide to upgrade the CPU. So if you have any suggestions for a CPU and motherboard that would be great.

I would get 4670k and z87 motherboard only difference between i7 and i5 is that i7 has hyper threading wich 99% of games cant even use so save yourself the money. ANother option is wait a few more weeks and get z97 motherboard and 4790k but it will cost a lot more.

What's your budget for the upgrade?

In the majority of instances, you won't see a performance difference between the 4770k and 4670k. Even when games use up to 8 threads (all of the i7's hyperthreads) they're still not used effectively and give very little FPS gain.

For a motherboard, grab a Z97.

I am looking to spend about £280 really. If I purchased the 4670k and z87 do you think I will see a big performance upgrade compared to my current cpu?

You absolutely will see a performance boost.

Another alternative: Grab a Z97 motherboard which should support Broadwell in future, whereas Z87 will not. You could also wait until around June 2nd when the i5 4690k releases - it will probably be priced very closely to the i5 4670k, but will have slightly increased clock speed and better TIM to reduce heat and increase overclocking capability.

Another alternative: The Xeon 1230v3. Provides almost indentical performance to an i7 4770 whilst costing a good bit less. Although its extra 4 threads wouldn't be used in most instances, they'd be good to have if upcoming games do in fact utilise 8 threads fully.

In the end, it's up to you. I would personally wait a few weeks and grab an i5 4690k and a Z97 motherboard if gaming is the primary concern.

Alright I think I will hold out for the i5 4690k and a z97 mb, thanks for the help

Any suggestions for the Z97 MB? if possible from amazon.
