I just noticed Shadow Volume Copy is set to Manual under Services.msc as startup type, god knows how much time passed since its last run, however Automatic Maintanence works in fact it just worked today. I also noticed my samsung ssd (250GB) remaining %87 shows in HWinfo64 as "remaning drive life" at bottom. Samsung Magician shows AHCI and TRIM enabled so its good, however that windows service worried me because I did read somewhere that service needed to do Windows automatic defrag/optimize itself at background but then again I turned off "Optimize Drives" service from Services.msc long time ago. Is these related to each other? Should I do Optimize in Samsung Magician software?

Just turn the Optimization in Windows back on, and...
You shouldn't run defragmentation on an SSD, unless you want to cripple it. As for your OS, what Windows OS are you working with? If you're on Windows 10, please mention the version(not edition) of the OS. As for your SSD, what Samsung SSD are you working off of? Any firmware updates pending?

Just turn the Optimization in Windows back on, and leave it alone.

I turned Optimize Drives on from services.msc, and working great with my samsung magician software it seems.

Optimize Drives: Manual with Monthly optimization selected
Performance optimization: power saving mode

Good thing I found this before my ssd done for! God knows how much time that service wasn't running, perhaps that is the reason I already have like crapton TBs written in 2,5 years.

I did read somewhere on Google a windows 10 bug ruins the SSDs due to this but I think that was Optimize Drives service runs so often, not an actual problem.

I use Windows 10 20H2

Thanks a ton!

My Win 10 and 11 boxes have been SSD only for many years. A dozen or more SSDs.
Optimization in Windows left at default.
It killed none of them.

It might be time to let your Win 10 update itself.

Ha! Last time I updated my Win 10, it was a disaster in all sides, got stuck at downloading on Windows Update panel for like an hour then redownloaded for like 3 times, and then blasted OS decided to set update process itself to Manual instead of Automatic so I got stuck at restart loop during a update at that HUGE blue screen did hurt my eyes. I had to adjust my monitors brightness to low. Luckily I had a backup from my external drive and restored everything and then I had to update everything like Steam, games,Origin,Autodesk,Discord literally everything.

I rather die in hell than updating this computer again

But hey thanks

🙄 I don’t know what you guys do to your computers but I have never had one problem with windows update ever in my life and that goes across all the hundreds machines at work and my machines at home

You can’t just turn the update service off in Windows 10. you had to hack the windows operating system to stop updates. Good luck with that

I also disable automatic updates but twice a month I update it religiously.

There was a problem in the past where the optimize app would ID a ssd as a hdd.

The result was the app would defrag the ssd on a regular basis.
This led to a lot of unneeded writes to the ssd.
Not a good thing to do.

Bad news, I do video editing job thus meaning creating large video files on my hard drive, however for some reason Optimize Drives service consumes large amount of disk usage right after video file created even though I only did choose SSD to optimize like every one else mentioned here, leave it on and forget, thats what I did, but now it slows down my entire computer because Disk Defragment service keep catching up(?) my video files. I didn't choose my video output folders aka hard drives to defrag, so the service rans on its own and lags my pc.

I turned off the Optimize Drives service again to avoid this, do not like when Windows 10 do things on its own. Plus my SSD already saw huge increase of system speed, windows and panels opens faster.

Besides, samsung magician says 16.4TB written shows GOOD in SMART without any other abnormal values, so its ok

I guess I just leave it off and move on with my life from this madness.

Defrag app shows my SSD in defrag menu as solid state drive so I guess bug have been fixed by Windows updates in past
