Lop-sided deals

Hey all. I have Civ3+C3C+PLY and there is one thing that bothers me:
lop-sided deals. It seems that the other civs always want more than I get
from them, even on the early levels. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Not really. The AI "knows" how a good value one tech is for you. If you
alone have the tech then it's "price" is much greater than if some-one
else has it also. And then there is also the AI-human factor, the AI will
see the other AI being better when making deals. For example in Regent
level the "AI offer is worth 130% of the same thing offered by a human"
(quote from civfanatics).

And then there is also the nation factor. For example British/England is
never eager to give me anything useful for my tech, but then again Spain
and France are quite nice to deal with. I don't know if this is mentioned
anywhere but it seems to affect what nation you are dealing with (this
might be linked with culturally similar races).

First thing, the trading is biased to be somewhat unequal to begin
with. The AI *does* want more from you in a trade, and the amount
increases as the level goes up.

Second is that the value of things isn't always immediately obvious.
A two tech for one trade can be a net profit, if you can trade it away
for enough to others. Luxuries and strategic resources are more
valuable the larger your empire is, and the more luxuries you have the
more the next one is worth (Marketplaces are a big amplifier of this,
but I think that the trade doesn't take them into account).

Third, your relationship and military power affect the deal
somewhat. If they are gracious or polite, trading is easier. If they
are annoyed, don't expect quite as good a deal. If you are weaker
militarily, they are more likely to demand tech rather than trade. I
am not sure how much this affects costs, but it does affect what
trades are possible.

Fourth, techs are more valuable when they have wonders which are
unbuilt. Each AI personality favors certain techs as well -- some
will pay a lot for one which another will not, and vice versa.
Certain techs are rated extremely high in value (spaceflight,
nationalism, any others?). Also, the value of a tech is adjusted by
the number of players that know it. If only one AI has it, it is
worth a lot. Likewise, if you have it, the first time you sell it you
get the best price, others will pay less.

Check what the cost is to you for 10% entertainment. That is a good
guide to what a luxury will cost you. It is a quantity thing. If you
want a luxury to satisfy your large population expect to pay far more
than a nation state might offer you for your luxuries.

So one luxury is equivalent in happiness-causing to 10% on the luxury
slider? Is this on all versions of Civ 3 or just Conquests?

No, it doesn't work like at all. Luxuries and the entertainment
slider are almost completely unrelated.

The slider causes the indicated percentage of a cities income to go
towards making citizens happy.
Luxuries cause 1 person in every city (connected to the luxery) to
become happy. Marketplaces increase the happiness gain for the 3rd
thru 8th luxury.

They aren't exactly equivalent. But as with science purchases, you
can use the tax cost as a rough estimate of the gold value for the
thing.
