Hey all,

Trying to pick a video card. As the title says, I can't choose between a GTX 670 or a HD 7970. I'll be playing any games I can get my hands on at 1920x1080. This includes World of Tanks, GW2, CS:GO, Planetside 2, Path of Exile, BF3...

My pick for a 670 is as follows:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127685

I have a MSI GTX 570 now and it has been fairly solid. Some small issues, but nothing too wild.

Regarding a 7970, I have no idea. My choice would have been the MSI 7970 Lightning (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127670) but the price on them is ridiculous compared to other 7970 offerings.

Also, I have been keeping an eye on the Sapphire cards, Gigabyte, and ASUS cards, but they all seem to have very mixed reviews.

In addition, I plan on overclocking, and would like to have a solid cooling solution on the card.

Oh, I also have a Silverstone FT-02 if that aids in the process at all.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Should I just stick with the 670, or is it worthwhile to get a 7970 instead?? If so, what brand/card?

Thanks a lot!

Timetolivecustoms on youtube said that the 7970 Matrix Platinum is crap, not sure about the coil whine its just one of those things.

The thing is I wouldnt recommend a vanilla 7970 over a 670PE, the Ghz edition is more expensive with nothing to gain unless you rolling 2560x1440 +. So I recommend the OP get a 670 PE card MSI always tends to overbuild their cards, its one of the best cards out right now.

Well if you are using a 1080p monitor you will be fine with a 670. If you want to OC i totally recommend to get the GTX 670 windforce from Gigabyte it has the best cooling on 670 card. The only reason you should get a 7970 it if you plan to play at a higher resolution than 1920x1080/1200 because it has more Vram than the 670.

Right now 7970 just released new drivers that are making it out preform 670 but that could change at any given time the 7970 has a deal where you can get three games right now for free with it i would stick with the 670 but you might want to go with 7970 it's up to you

Right. I understand that it outperforms the GTX 670.

The question is which 7970 is best to get for overclocking.. other than the MSI Lightning?

Yeah. I have looked at both of those. The 7970 Matrix Platinum looks quite nice, as does the Vapor-X. Unfortunately, I can't find the Vapor-X in stock in Canada, and I'm not sure if the 7970 Matrix Platinum is really worth the $120 price increase over the MSI 670 PE.

AMD driver team has been releasing great drivers with excellent performance increases there in a lot of untapped potential inthe GCN architecture. The 7970Ghz is what you want its been faster than the 680 for a while now, we know what happens when its overclocked.

no its not worth $120 more the the 670 PE, the 670 PE is excellent!

Well i am not sure which others are good allot are plagued with coil whine examples http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=video&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDcQtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dd7Oliy3asjU&ei=45qJULGFNeizigKJt4H4CQ&usg=AFQjCNHrA_AH0F8pRaXr_fzsYRWfDQaAiA&sig2=0Uh-eDn8FBX2Iv7b8BdwiA

Yeah. Pretty much what I was thinking. If I see a good Ghz edition on sale in the next week or so I'll grab it. If not, I'll just stick to the 670 more than likely.

Yeah I know its a tough choice but the 670 PE is one of those rare cards that have both exceptional build and performance. The 7970Ghz is the fastest card but its meaningless if your not using 2560 res or a mulit panel setup. At least Nvidia gives solid 3D and good SLI support so there are tradeoffs going either way.

GTX 670 better solution at 1080p, the game is optimize for nvidia, also Ati still having problem with drivers since the dawn of times...to aboid frame drop OC your CPU a lot and get 16GB of ram and a SSD...Love the new AiO watercooling on the market a H100 or Therlmaltake extreme are good solution for easy OC.
