Hi all,
Turned on my PC this morning and merrily started getting to work on some web development, only to have the following happen:
1. screen switched to power saver (orange light) and message with 'no input device detected'.
2. loss of all input / output to any part of the system, including keyboard, where the num/scroll/caps lock lights went out and wouldn't come back on. Case power and reset buttons do not have any effect but are still lit. No hard drive activity indicator, no network cable lights.
3. system continues to run with normal power. When you unplug the PC you can hear the hard drive head snapping back. Fans run, incl. GPU, case and CPU, and the case fan controller still controls the fans which it runs.
Unplugged power cable, restarted system. Gets through boot, POST, etc. I.e. the system runs as quickly as normal. I started a game up (Steel Division: Normandy 44) as a stress test, and it ran smoothly for about 10 minutes before the same things happened as described above.
This time, I unplugged, ensured that all power was disconnected and then did a CMOS reset, then restarted the system. Again, boot, POST, etc all worked as usual. Left the PC running for about an hour just idling. Came back and started doing some web browsing (nothing heavy, 3 tabs at most). Lasted about half an hour and now the same thing has happened.
What I get from this is:
1. Issue lies somewhere in the base mechanics of the machine; i.e. it's not a RAM, GPU, HDD issue, because the failure is in the systems below that; it's most likely to be the motherboard or PSU.
2. Equally, it's not a total failure of the PSU, since the fans and hard drives still run, and they are powered directly off the PSU.
3. It's not an obvious fault with the mobo since none of the capacitors appear to be blown. It's not a short circuit related to the build of the rig, since it has run perfectly well for 2 1/2 years without any similar issues other than 1 or 2 random restarts.
Based on the above, I'm left with the assumption that it is the motherboard which is for some reason failing, and has only started doing so this morning, after 2 1/2 years of running without any issues. Can anyone point me towards something that would help isolate the problem (this was my first build so I don't have spare parts...)?
It doesn't have on board video, so I'm limited about removing components other than RAM.
