Emergency**

Hi. In all of my brilliance, I accidentally uninstalled MS office 2010. I ran a system restore in my panic, thinking it would restore my system to an earlier point in time (as indicated on the steps with the restore function). It didn't work. It restored the original set up. As a result, I lost all of my previously installed software, cookies, etc. I have three questions:

1. I have my product key - if I reinstall Office, will it retrieve all of my old documents?
2. Is there a way to get all of my previous settings back (loaded software) without having to go back and reload all of the products manually?
3. Will you please shoot me and put me out of my misery if the answers to these questions are "no"?

Thanks in advance.
Linda

If you picked the "restore to factory" option, you have basically reformatted (erased) your drive to the same state it was in the day you bought it. Reinstalling Office will not help as the documents have been erased.

You might, if you are very lucky, be able to recover some data by using a third party program such as Recuva, but don't hold your breath. If you want to try recovering data, DO NOT USE THAT DRIVE FOR ANYTHING, until you have attempted that recovery.

All of your programs, etc, will need to be reinstalled, but ONLY AFTER YOU ATTEMPT RECOVERY.

I feel your pain, been there - done that.

@OP, can you confirm exactly what button you hit to 'restore'?

  • ■System Restore: Undoes newly installed programs and drivers. No file loss.
■(Win8+ only)Refresh your PC without affecting your files: Go back to factory defaults, but keep files.
■(Win8+ only)Remove everything and reinstall windows: Wipe everything.

I think Windows 8 called the second two 'Refresh' and 'Reset'.
