Lost disk space

Hello,
I've installed a new EIDE hard drive into my PC. For now it's my slave until I can remove the old IDE hard drive. Since I'm just learning how to do this I practiced a bit with formatting and partitioning the new drive.
I formatted and partitioned it, and deleted the partitions a few times until I was sure I had the hang of it, but when I reformat- ted and repartitioned it the last time It's missing 34.24Gb of disk space. It should have 500Gb of space.
My OS is Windows XP Pro, and sp3, so I don't understand why the formatting program is short- ing me like this. Can any one help? Please.

So I'm not missing any disk space? I take it that the unaccessable disk space is due to driver software? But 34.24 Gbs , really?

On my BIOS screen it shows as 500Gb. Under My Computer it shows up as only 465Gb(total size) , and under Disk Management as 465.76 Gb.
