lost my data but the remaining hard drive space didn't increase.

i'll get to the point,i took out my internal hard drive and took it to a friend's house,i took some movies and stuff,put the whole thing in two folders,when i reach home i reconnect my hard disk and start my pc,now the remaining space in my drive partition,after the transfer was complete was 20 gb,i try to open the folder,one of them opens,the other one,however,didn't open,instead,when i tried to open it,it displayed an error message,i was in a hurry so i "OKed" the error message and after that the folder which didn't open,vanished,i assumed it was deleted,but the storage space remaining in my partition didn't change,had the folder and the contents therein been deleted,the remaining storage space would have increased. it didnt.so, that is my problem and i would like an explanation as to where did my stuff go and if possible,a method to retrieve it. BTW,i checked the recycle bin,its not there.
