I have started up a computer that has been shelved for
several months. It is saying the old password is expired
and asking for the password to set a new password. I have
tried all my old, familiar passwords to no avail. The
user name is Default. Any suggestions?

If this is XP Home, start the computer in Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the machine is starting up. This will get you to
the right menu. Log into the normally hidden Administrator account. The
default password is a blank. Once in, go to the User Accounts applet in
Control Panel and set your password to something you will remember.

If you have XP Pro and you have tried to log in as Administrator and the
default password is not a blank, here is a link to a program you can
use to change the Administrator password to a blank:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

NTpasswd is very easy to use; just read the instructions on the website.
