I've managed to lose the XP-CD I purchased from Dell. Are there any
optoins other than purchasing a new one? If I have to reinstall XP on
a Dell system that had a different XP-CD installed before will this
cause problems?

Bill,
PC Magazine had an article this month on how to create your own backup
CD. If you don't have the mag, perhaps their web site has the info.

From my experience, as long as the XP CD matches the version installed on the
Dell, you should be able to use it to reinstall the software when needed. If
your system has XP Home, you would need to use an XP Home CD... Ben Myers

As long as it is the same version, i.e. Dell OEM, Home, Pro.

Around $80.00 to $90.00 as I recall, some where in that range.

Same as street price at Staples, Wal*Mart, Officemax, etc. More or less. Same
as my distributor charges me when I need a fresh legit copy for a computer going
out of here. No bargains from Micro$oft on Windows XP. No discounts for
quantity on non-forgeries... Ben Myers

No, they are NOT BIOS locked, so there ARE legal issues. They do not require
activation on Dell's, but they will install on any machine.

They will install on any machine, given a valid (retail) XP key. They
will (also) install on any Dell machine without the key by checking
the BIOS to ensure they are on a Dell box.

I'm sure there are legal issues, as (for instance) you could install
XP Pro on a machine that had only been licensed (from the factory) for
HP Home. However, the monetary value of the CD is pretty low, as you
will see if you look up media kit prices for XP. [Yeah, I know, not
the same, and you wouldn't catch me posting CD images...]

Hi, I am a dell technician. Dell is expensive and slow shipping even to me lmao. When i need a cd fast I go to www.oemsoftwaresource.com. They carry most dell reinstall cds and dvds. So far ive bought: Windows xp media center 2005 for dell. Windows XP professional. Windows XP home. So far those have worked fine. Hopefully this will help someone out someday.
