Hello, i was just playing Final fantasy XIV with dx11 and suddenly i heard a loud pop and my computer shut off and i noticed a burning smell sorta reminiscent of a skunk, and it stunk up a bunch of the house and my dad mentioned he could see smoke in the house. my computer powered back up fine, i noticed the graphics card felt hot and it seemed like the smell came from the PSU but im not sure. No signs of damage that i can tell, and things seem to be running fine, but not sure if i should be worried or if this is a warning sign that i should replace something before serious damage is caused. Is there any way i can test that my PSU is running optimally? The PSU i have is a corsair 750i , my graphics card is SAPPHIRE NITRO Radeon R9 390, CPU is intel i7 6700k. I have not done any overclocking, the build is about half a year old, and have had no issues til now.
Thanks

For that particular PSU, the fan won't run unless you reach a preset power level but not while idling. The loud pop COULD have been in the PSU or even on the motherboard somewhere, possibly a capacitor. This happened to me once on an old AMD rig; loud pop, smoke, but computer still ran fine until I retired it. A smell test and a look with a flashlight might be in order.

I did check using my phone as a flashlight and didnt notice anything out of the ordinary. Im hoping maybe it was just a random surge or something?

If you heard a pop, and smelled something burning, you need to check a few things. Look at the caps on your motherboard to find if any of them are blown. Shorts can occur, and motherboards do fail, just like PSUs. Everything you described spells PSU failure, and Corsair should be able to warranty it. If you were able to power it on, it's not likely a bulk cap failure. In fact, I'd be the bank it wasn't, as they are Nippon Chemicons, a 470u and a 390u. Double check whether or not you have 750 or a 750i, as the 750s are made by a different OEM, and they cheapoed out in the build, whereas the 750i has Nippon Chemicons across the board.

RMi's have a 7 year warranty, RM's have 5 years.

Assuming you do have an RMi and that's not the issue, what motherboard do you have?

The PSU is a RM 750i and the motherboard is a gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7
I've been using the computer all day today, and no issues so far. doing look across the motherboard i dont see any burns or blown capacitors. Im thinking whatever it was, it had something to do with the PSU, or perhaps under a covered spot of motherboard. But if it was the PSU and the computer has been running fine all day is there anything to worry about? Would you recommend replacing the PSU? or should things be fine?
