Hey guys!

I've got a Seagate Barracuda 7200.2 (160GB) drive working loudly.

When doing nothing och simply writing in a text document and such, the drive may be totally silent, but whenever I start a program, load a web page - I mean do something that requires the least of effort - then the drive is produces noise. A bit hard to find a word for it, but it's like cracking or rattling or something of that sort.

Have tried chkdsk, no visible problems. The PC works well in general. Have got Win 7 x64, enough RAM and quite ok processor.

Any thoughts on what this might be caused by? What would you recommend? (and I don't mean solving it by buying a new one 🙂 )

Thanks!

When the drive is writing or reading something, it will make a couple of sounds with the head, but not loudly like you said. If it's loud, then the drive could possibly be close to failing (you did say that it found no problems on your software, but software sometimes are not that accurate). Back up any important files of yours if you think it's going to fail, it's better safe than sorry, also try opening the drive and see if everything inside is good. If there are any loose parts or pieces, then that could be the problem and the drive will need to be repaired or replaced.
