9600se is the fastest low profile card around.

If you can find one - it's nearly impossible to find a full height 9100, never mind a low profile one.

What about cutting a slot in the side of the case?

There are LOTS of low profile cards at Newegg, using the full height bracket. My solution would be to modify the bracket, use a different bracket, or use no bracket, so I could use one of these cards.

They have an Albatron FX5200 full version for $58 (half height card of course), I know they suck but I'm doubting they suck worse than the 9600SE. They have various other 5200 and 9600SE cards on half-height circuit boards, and an Aopen 5700LE half height for $113. You might want to check out the specifications on that 5700LE!

How do I find these cards? I look at the little pictures! You know, half height cards are actually shorter (in height) than full height card (duh).
